The 10 cheapest cities in the world

While some of the most expensive in the world are located in Asia, South Asian cities are heavily represented among the cheapest places to live

While some of the most expensive in the world are located in Asia, South Asian cities are also heavily represented among the cheapest places to live.

But the top two least expensive urban locations in 2019's Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) cost of living Worldwide Cost of Living rankings are located in countries ravaged by war or political instability.

The index is compiled from a survey that compares more than 400 individual prices across 160 products and services, including household supplies, rents and private school fees. New York is used as a base city, given a score of 100.

The EIU said that in India and Pakistan 'Income inequality means that low wages are the norm, limiting household spending and creating many tiers of pricing as well as strong competition from a range of retail sources.

'This, combined with a cheap and plentiful supply of goods into cities from rural producers with short supply chains as well as government subsidies on some products, has kept prices down, especially by Western standards.'

Read on to find out which 10 metropolises are the least costly.
