Quizzing the newest wealth manager in Wiltshire

After leaving Rathbones earlier this year, wealth manager James Maltin, has had a jam-packed year.  Striking out on his own, he has launched Ridgeway Investment Management, based in Wiltshire just north of Marlborough. On top of that he completed the 3 Tours Challenge: cycling the Italian, French and Spanish tours all one day ahead of the official race. He cycled alongside ex-England footballer and Leukaemia survivor, Geoff Thomas, raising money for the charity, Cure Leukaemia.  We caught up with Maltin to find out how running his own business his going.

Why have you launched Ridgeway Investment Management?

'Having spent a career working in private client wealth management, I have had the good fortune to learn from and meet some of the world’s most successful investors.  I have learned not only the dos and don’ts of the business, but also the best way to manage money to improve the financial position and thereby the lives of the clients I serve.  Armed with this knowledge, I have set up an independent practice, supported by Raymond James, in order to utilise what I have learned, and deliver to private clients the very best results.'

What sets Ridgeway apart from other private client investment managers?

'Ridgeway is a wealth management boutique and we distinguish ourselves from other wealth management practices in three distinct ways: first, we invest using a proprietary investment process, informed by thorough analysis and implemented with strict discipline; we are what peers would describe as ‘value investors’.  Secondly, we run concentrated portfolios, investing primarily in direct equities. This ensures that at any given time, we know exactly what we own, and why.  Third, whilst we service clients in London, our investment office is in Wiltshire, far away from the noise of the City.' 

Who are your target clients?

'We are targeting private clients with liquid assets of £1m and above. Initially we are taking on no more than 100 private clients.  We are not seeking to be the biggest private client investment manager, but we do intend on being the best.'

What is the story behind the name Ridgeway?

'The Ridgeway is the oldest trading route in the UK, dating back to the Neolithic period.  It is a chalk ridge, 87 miles long that begins at Avebury stone circle in Wiltshire, crosses the Thames at Goring and Streatley, and rises up to Ivinghoe Beacon, near Aylesbury. Most of my life I have been fortunate enough to live near to the Ridgeway, and it is where the investment office is based today.  If you plot the Ridgeway on a map, it looks like the chart of a well-managed portfolio – there are times when it goes down, times when it goes up, and at times it appears to be making no progress whatsoever; but over time, the trajectory is clearly discernible.' 

What are your aims over the next 12-18 months?

'Over the coming year we will continue to attract clients, bolster the investment team, and establish the Ridgeway Foundation, into which we will contribute a portion of the company’s profits.  With no external shareholders, we have the great privilege of being able to serve the broader community, whilst also serving our clients.  Looking further out, our objective is to develop a solid track record of investment results, and to market this to institutional clients.'

During the 3 Tours Challenge, Maltin spent the summer in the saddle with chef Hayden Groves. As part of their fundraising efforts, Groves has written a cookbook, collating recipes from their journey across Italy, France and Spain - ‘a cycling and food odyssey of 10,403 km’.
