What is your typical client demographic?
In the North West, we serve clients across the region, inclusive of the greater Manchester area, Liverpool, Chester and as far as the Lake District and Newcastle for a small number of clients. Typically, our clients are entrepreneurial, with many owner/managers of businesses with a regional and more nationwide reach. We also look after retired and acquired wealth, as well as supporting the charitable and philanthropic needs of our clients.
What differentiates your region?
There is a great deal of ambition, energy and optimism here for how the North West can grow in the years ahead. There is an openness and honesty about the people living here, which is refreshing and inspiring.
What challenges does your area face?
From a commercial perspective, it is a very competitive environment, with global names present in the wealth management arena, as well as the more North West heritage businesses. That being said, from a holistic perspective and in terms of the foundation for the relationship we build with clients, I believe we have few peers. From a practical perspective, the local region would clearly benefit from increased investment in transportation and infrastructure to improve efficiency and productivity and therefore the potential for growth in the regional economy.
What’s the best thing about living in your area?
Without question, the people. The North West is very welcoming and open, with a keenness to network and share ideas, and a motivation to build and succeed. Business aside, there is a great deal to see and experience in the history, culture and beauty of the wider region which can keep you occupied and enlightened without any difficulty. And, as needed, London and the South are only two hours or so away from the major regional cities, so connectivity to the capital is not an issue today.
What is your office motto?
While we don’t have a specific office motto, Arbuthnot Latham as a whole focuses on meeting the needs of our clients ‘for business, for family, for life’. It’s important to always keep the bigger picture in mind for our clients, and to value the relationship we have with them as they reach life’s milestones.
Are you bullish or bearish?
We are bullish on global equities and alternative investments such as infrastructure, as we observe strong global growth and signs of inflation. We are bearish on fixed interest, UK equities, and absolute return in light of the rising interest rate environment, uncertainty over the UK economy and the outcome of Brexit negotiations, and lacklustre returns coming from the absolute returns and hedge space. We remain cautious of the impact of rising interest rates on asset prices in 2018, but are focused on the strong corporate fundamentals globally and see the recent market volatility as a buying opportunity in many pockets of the market.
