Q&A with Mark Rondel, senior business development manager at Aberdeen Standard Capital, Jersey

What is your typical client demographic?

Although there are a number of local clients that invest with us directly, we also have some very strong intermediary relationships with trust companies in Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man, relationships are therefore global.

What differentiates your region?

Jersey’s strong regulatory framework sets it apart from other regions. Our framework is one of the strongest in the world, and it’s designed to bring clarity and transparency to the world of finance. As one of the best regulated international finance corporations, we have been acknowledged by independent assessments from some of the world’s leading bodies, including the World Bank and IMF, as well as scoring top marks from the OECD on tax transparency. The beaches are lovely as well!

What challenges are facing your local area?

The investment market is very competitive and this is putting pressure on fees. It is important that investors fully understand all charges and are able to make like-for-like comparisons, taking into account the overall service and investment returns.

Bullish or bearish?

Cautiously optimistic, but the focus remains on finding the right company in which to invest for the long term. We seek to identify companies that will benefit from shifting trends, while avoiding those where change will be detrimental. Experience has taught us that companies that have strong balance sheets, generate cashflow in excess of their operational requirements, and invest in their business as well as distribute to shareholders, tend to generate stronger and more sustainable returns. As a result, they merit a long-term position
in portfolios, regardless of shorter-term sentiment.

What is the best thing about living in your region?

The general way of life. The commute to work, in comparison to some regions in the UK, is very easy and the weather in summer is usually fantastic, which encourages you to leave the office at a reasonable hour and get down to the beach with the family and dog for some real family time. It’s a very safe place to live.

What is a typical saying in your region?

‘Ah bah crie’, a Jersey expletive (never used in the office.)
