Last week, we hosted over 70 investment professionals at the beautiful St Pierre Marriot hotel in Chepstow for our annual Citywire South West Retreat. Joining us were 12 fund houses who gave insights into topics such as robotics and AI and why it might be a brave new world for UK equities.
As we kicked off day one, there was a buzz about the room in preparation for our first guest speaker. Maggie Alphonsi MBE woke everyone up for the day ahead as she discussed leadership and having a winning mindset. She reflected on her experiences as a key member of the team that won the 2014 Rugby World Cup for the first time in 20 years. This was definitely a talk not to be missed.
After lunch, we held an important panel debate about mental health in the workplace. Chaired by Citywire journalist Oliver Smith, special guest speakers included Rosanna Williams-Wood, founder of The Secret Coach, David Beeney, founder of Breaking the Silence, and Steve Nelson, consulting director at The Lang Cat. The panel followed a recent candid video interview we did with Quilter’s Paul Feeney, who highlighted the importance of talking more about mental illness and breaking the stigma associated with it.
After a wonderful dinner full of sparkling conversation and fantastic food, comedian and presenter Fred MacAulay took to the stage to delight the audience with a hilarious stand-up set.
The second day welcomed physicist, mathematician and author Simon Singh and his enigma machine. Sharing with us the wonders of cryptology and how cracking the enigma code won the war, he filled us in on the cipher challenge he set for the public, which included 10 ciphers and a chance to win £10,000.
A big thank you to everyone who attended this year’s retreat. From all of us here, we can’t wait to see you next year!
