When I joined New Model Adviser® I was told I would be sent to the UK’s most glamorous and exciting hotspots. So why am I making my second visit to the Beefeater Restaurant in Telford?
Avid readers may recall a fresh face interview with financial adviser Matt Hignett of Beaumont Financial at this very venue. Hignett and I agreed it would be the only suitable place for his colleague, financial adviser Thomas Parmiter (pictured), and I to also meet.
As obscure 90s pop music plays in the background, the recently qualified Parmiter explains his journey into financial advice.
Parmiter’s career started in 2012 with a stint at Capita. He held five different roles at the firm, which set him up perfectly for life at Beaumont. This included his final role as operations manager, in which he managed 90 employees.
‘Beaumont Financial wants people with a variety of experience,’ says Parmiter. ‘Mark [Evans, director] wants advisers with a good track record who can handle a great deal of autonomy.’
He continues: ‘I have always tried to identify opportunities and voice my views. I kept asking for more work and greater responsibility at Capita. One of my fears is a job becoming stagnant.’
Parmiter describes Capita as an immense learning curve, and says managing older people has helped him in dealing with clients now. Ultimately it was Parmiter’s desire to be the ‘best he could be’ that led him to Beaumont Financial.
‘Beaumont showed me a clear route to how I could become an adviser. Since joining the firm, there has been huge support. I like the firm and its core values,’ he says.
After joining Beaumont in August 2016, Parmiter quickly secured his diploma status. Having studied hard for his diploma, Parmiter thinks a solid work ethic has become a must-have for new entrants to the profession.
But although he values qualifications, the psychology graduate says he was particularly keen to get stuck into the face-to-face element of advice. ‘I just wanted to complete the exams as soon as possible, so I could start focusing on the clients and understanding them more.’
Parmiter has had a curiosity for investing from a young age. He references BBC television series Million Dollar Traders, a show focused on turning eight ordinary people into professional level traders.
He explains: ‘The show truly caught my eye. After watching, I started looking at websites such as Investopedia. During university I was running mock investment portfolios.’
Striving towards goals
Parmiter has his sights set on becoming chartered. But for the moment that will have to wait. ‘I am currently planning my wedding and honeymoons (plural!), which is completely taking over my personal life right now.’
Upon his return, Parmiter will undertake more exams as he strives for chartered status. He also has ambitions to follow in the footsteps of Hignett, who now runs Beaumont’s new Cheshire office.
‘We have multiple offices and keep growing. I hope to explore the same opportunities as my colleagues.’
